Many people believe owners donate their boats/yachts because the boats are projects or have problematic histories. Fact is, most yachts are donated because the owners have overimproved them, which validates the high charitable contribution appraisals. Additionally, the foundations have the donated boat surveyed prior to accepting the vessel then are required to make upgrades where needed.

Owners donate their boats to take advantage of the charitable donation tax savings, support the institution or foundation and save the time and expense of ownership while waiting for a sale.

Buying a donated vessel involves leasing the boat for 36 months. This lease term protects the donor’s charitable donation amount. Buyer leases the vessel with 1/3 down, 1/3 in 35 payments and the final third when exercising the option to buy. Bottom line, leasing a donated boat and exercising the purchase option, is a proven path to making a nice buy on your next yacht.
